Pumped hydro project gets 30-year license

16 December 2009– Appalachian Power, a unit of American Electric Power, received a new 30-year license to operate the 636 MW Smith Mountain Pumped Storage Project in Virginia.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted the license for the hydroelectric power facility to replace an existing 50-year license, which expires in 2010.

The project consists of the Smith Mountain and Leesville reservoirs and two sets of generators in the Smith Mountain Dam and the Leesville Dam.
