National Grid to pursue Cape Wind energy deal

2 December 2009– Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said National Grid is expected to pursue a long-term deal with developers of the Cape Wind offshore wind farm, proposed for waters in Nantucket Sound.

National Grid will look into buying power from the planned 130 turbine offshore wind farm. The Cape Wind project is still awaiting regulatory approvals and the state Department of Public Utilities must approve any deal that results between the two companies. A power purchase agreement is seen as critical to securing financing for the Nantucket Sound project and ensuring it qualifies for federal incentives.
