Nuclear upgrade OK’d at Prairie Island

13 November 2009– Minnesota state regulators have approved Xcel Energy’s request to increase power and radioactive waste storage at the 1,000 MW Prairie Island nuclear power plant. The utility said it plans to spend $600 million to upgrade the plant to handle higher pressure and temperatures. The upgrade will add 164 MW to the plant’s generation output.

Xcel also won regulatory approval for 29 spent fuel casks and asked regulators for an additional 35 casks.
