ABB wins $25 million power order in Peru

06 July 2009– ABB will supply electrical and automation solutions worth $25 million for an expansion of the Machu Picchu hydroelectric power plant east of Lima, Peru.

As part of the project, ABB will provide an integrated instrumentation control and electrical (ICE) solution, which includes protection and control equipment, medium- and high-voltage switchgear, generator circuit breakers, transformers and cables.

A second powerhouse built underground will bring the plant’s total capacity from 90 MW to 190 MW. The expansion will also help regulate the level and flow of the Vilcanota River, minimizing the risk of landslides and flooding.

The project is part of an alliance with Harbin Electric Machinery Co. Ltd., and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
