Offshore wind proposed for Great Lakes

23 April 2009 — New York Power Authority (NYPA) plans a public-private initiative to develop wind power projects in the New York waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

To start the initiative, known as the Great Lakes Offshore Wind Project, NYPA is working with wind power developers and others to gather information on installing wind power projects at least 120 MW in size.

NYPA released a request for expressions of interest to develop the projects. A request for proposals to examine technical issues should be released in the coming weeks.

Governor David A. Paterson set a goal for New York to meet 45 percent of its electricity needs through energy efficiency and renewable sources by 2015. Paterson said wind power could help meet that goal.
