Swantech partners with NREL to study turbine gearboxes

17 February 2009 – Curtiss Wright Flow Control Co.’s Swantech business unit is participating in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Gearbox Reliability Collaborative (GRC), which aims to improve the reliability and durability of wind turbine gearboxes.

The GRC allows gearbox manufacturers, bearing manufacturers, wind turbine owner/operators and wind turbine manufacturers to team up for joint projects that address specific issues on wind turbine gearboxes. Projects include full-scale testing and analysis of actual gearboxes, both in the field at the Xcel Ponnequin wind farm and in the NREL 2.5 MW dynamometer test facility.

Swantech will use its Swanwind system to monitor the condition and health of the gearbox and wind turbine drive train components. The system is designed to provide early detection of component wear and lubricant condition and identify how loading stress can contribute to part fatigue.
