28 October 2008 – The annual POWER-GEN Asia conference and exhibition held in Malaysia last week saw a record attendence of 6000 power industry professionals, four of whom went home as winners of the new “Best Paper Awards”.
The newly established awards recognised the conference paper judged most worthy by a panel of industry experts in each of the four conference tracks. The awards, along with two highly commended certificates per track, were made at a spectacular closing ceremony at the KLCC Convention Centre, featuring traditional dancers from Tourism Malaysia.
The winners in each category were:
Strategy & Business – Dr Bob Noor of GE Energy for “The use of risk weighted cost estimates to set project budgets”
CLeaner & Greener – Christopher Wedig of The Shaw Group for “Impact of Carbon Dioxide Removal Systems on Fossil fuel Plants”
Combustion & Generation – Ari Kettunen of Foster Wheeler Energia for “Development of Ultra Supercritical CFB Technology to meet the Challenge of Climate Change”
Operation & Optimization – Ere Jaaskelainen for “Saving Energy through Drive Efficiency”
Special mention went to the paper from Dr Roland Fischer of Siemens whose dissertation on the product validation of Siemens H class gas turbine technology at Irsching 4 Test Center demonstrated exceptional levels of innovation in the industry.
Some 550 delegates attended the POWER-GEN Asia conference this year and heard keynote speeches by Dato Shaziman Abu Mansor, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications for Malaysia, Colin Tam, chairman if the Independent Power Producers Forum, Jim Suciu, President of Global Sales and Marketing for GE Energy and Tan Sri Leo Moggie, Chairman of Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
