Flow meter

The Wafer-Cone flow meter from McCrometer features a modular design to assist in replacing the flow element and adjust to changing flow conditions in dynamic processes.
The Wafer-Cone flow meter relies on differential pressure technology with built-in flow conditioning to achieve an accuracy of +0.5 percent, with a repeatability of +0.1 percent. It operates over a flow range of 10:1. It is designed for liquid or gas service in line sizes from 0.5 to 6 inches.
The Wafer-Cone flow meter has the ability to self-condition flow. It is designed to eliminate the need for extensive up/down stream straight pipe runs required by other DP technologies, such as orifice plates and venturi tubes. It can be installed in a piping system or can be easily retrofit into an existing piping layout.
The Wafer-Cone flow meter’s design is built-into the basic flow sensor design. The Wafer-Cone conditions fluid flow to provide a stable flow profile that increases accuracy. The flow sensor’s design features a centrally located cone inside a tube. The cone interacts with the fluid flow and reshapes the velocity profile to create a lower pressure region immediately downstream.

LHDV load holding valves

HAWE Hydraulics released its new LHDV load holding valves. These pressure valves feature dampening components for use with “load sensing” spool valves.
HAWE’s load holding valves act on the return flow side of double-acting consumers. The LHDV valves block the return duct according to their set pressure (setting approximately 15 percent above the maximum load pressure), generating a counter force to the pushing (negative) load. Therefore, the pump acts to feed the inflow side, pressurizing the cylinder enough to overcome the set pressure of the load holding valve, thereby dropping the load.
The LHDV is available with a number of options, including shock valves and shuttle valves with or without a bypass check valve.

Universal Flow Monitors Inc. introduced a series of plastic-construction flow meters designed for transmitting corrosive fluids in water treatment. Applications for the new P420 Series of vortex-shedding flow meters include water, corrosives, brine and low-viscosity fluids.
The flow transmitters are electronic instruments with wetted parts entirely of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The non-mechanical meters are designed to transmit low-viscosity fluids that are compatible with PVC, including water that may contain particles.
The P420 flow meters are available in five pipe sizes with maximum flow rates as follows: 1/2 inch ( 12 GPM, 45 LPM), 3/4 inch (25 GPM, 95 LPM), 1 inch (50 GPM, 190 LPM), 1-1/2 inches (100 GPM, 380 LPM) and 2 inches (200 GPM, 750 LPM).
P420 vortex-shedding flow transmitters have no O-ring seals. Connection is made by either solvent welding PVC pipe into the socket port provided or threaded connection.
Electronic output is from a 4-20 mA two-wire transmitter rated “Intrinsically Safe” when used with barriers. The electronics package is totally potted and not vulnerable to shorting, corrosion, leaks, humidity or condensate from conduits or thermal cycling.

48-bit digital input board

United Electronic Industries (UEI) announced the release of the Guardian Series DNx-DIO-448 high density digital input boards The DNA-DIO-448 and DNR-DIO-448 are compatible with UEI’s “Cube” and “RACKtangle” I/O chassis, respectively. The board reads all 48 bits at sustained rates in excess of 1 kS/second. Input switching levels and hysteresis are software selectable from 0–28 VDC with 25 mV resolution. As part of UEI’s Guardian Series, the board uses an A/D input approach. A diagnostic input mode measures the analog voltage at each input, thus helping to enable the detection of short and open circuits as well marginal or failing drive circuitry. The analog input capability is also an installation, diagnostic and data acquisition tool.
Software for the DNA-DIO-448 is provided in the UEIDAQ Framework. The Framework provides an API that supports programming and operating systems including Windows, Vista, Linux and most real-time operating systems (e.g. QNX, RTX, RT Linux). The board is supported by LabVIEW, MATLAB/Simulink, DASYLab or any application supporting ActiveX, OPC or Modbus TCP control.

Wiring duct

Thomas & Betts is adding a halogen-free offering to its line of Ty-Duct wiring ducts. The Halogen-Free Ty-Duct product line is designed for high-temperature applications up to 95 C (203 F) or where specifications call for products that will not emit toxic or corrosive gases. These new Ty-Duct wiring ducts have an optimal UL94 Flammability Rating of V-0. Plus, they are 20 percent lighter than standard PVC materials.
The Halogen-Free Ty-Duct family is designed with the exact same form, fit and installation as the standard Ty-Duct wiring duct introduced in 2007. Ty-Duct wiring duct has smooth corners and edges to help prevent damage or disfigurement of wires, and its V-shaped slot lead-in helps with wire insertion. The Ty-Duct product’s two-point contact design enables the cover to be easily installed with less force and to remain in place, even under vibration.

Neutron Radiation Shielding

Borotron HD050 from Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products (Quadrant EPP) is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) formulation enhanced with 5 percent elemental boron that provides extra shielding against neutron radiation. The combination of boron within a matrix of HDPE, a naturally hydrogen-rich material, can work well in nuclear shielding applications. Potential uses include shielding for nuclear power plants, power generation areas in nuclear submarines and production areas for nuclear detection devices and the equipment itself. Quadrant EPP has developed a manufacturing process and proprietary testing methods that help ensure that the boron is evenly distributed for peak performance. Borotron HD050 plate is lighter than some other neutron-shielding materials such as concrete, and easier to work with in construction than other options including water. The new Quadrant EPP material is currently available in 1 inch by 48 ich by 96 inch plates.

Burst Operated Static Screen

The Beaudrey Burst Operated Static Screen (B.O.S.S.) is a cylindrical wedge wire screen designed to provide (high volume – low flow velocity) submerged static screening for cooling water intakes. The B.O.S.S. achieves intake velocities of less than 0.5 fps, qualifying it as a preapproved 316b technology. With no moving parts, the B.O.S.S. provides a low-maintenance alternative to traditional intake structure designs. Applications include intake screening structures in environmentally sensitive regions and/or for cooling water applications subject to EPA 316b fish mortality-reduction requirements; power plant once through cooling; ocean, river, lake, or reservoir source cooling. The B.O.S.S can be used in either fresh or salt water applications. The air burst cleaning system uses compressed air bursts to blow debris off the face of the wedge-wire when the screen becomes fouled. The cleaning process is completely automated and requires no operator action. The static screen is constructed with 304L SS; 316L SS; Duplex SS; Cu-Ni alloys; and titanium. It can be configured for 500 to 30,000 GPM and comes in 8-inch to 84-inch diameters. Multiple geometries are available.
