Surge protection device

Raycap Inc. developed a surge protection device (SPD) designed to provide continuous protection from over-voltage and other transient voltage activity for industrial equipment such as variable speed drives, programmable logic controls and power cabinets.

Designated “Strikesorb,” the SPD modules are designed to protect equipment from lightning strikes, power surges and spikes without performance deterioration. Strikesorb modules are available in a wide range of voltage and packaging configurations to protect sensitive equipment and electronics.

Strikesorb modules meet the requirements of IEC 61643-1 and UL 1449 2nd Edition – dated February 7, 2007 – without the use of internal fuses. Strikesorb’s fuseless design and its capability to withstand high short-circuit currents allow direct installation on busbars, precluding the need to install additional fuses or interconnection wires.

Strikesorb modules are comprised of a single, large distribution-grade MOV disc in an environmentally sealed aluminum housing that provides uniform distribution of the surge current over the total area of the MOV protection element. This results in a high-energy handling capability combined with ultra-low let-through voltage to the industrial equipment. The monolithic design also provides a straight electrical path directly to the suppression element, providing extremely low contact resistance and a superior heat dissipation mechanism to prevent aging and premature failures of the SPD.

Noise attenuation trim

Flowserve Corp. released the Flowserve Valtek Stealth, a gaseous noise trim that reduces sound pressure levels.

Stealth laser-cut discs are stacked to form the seat retainer. The cuts in the discs form channels for the fluid to pass through. Building on technologies from the field-proven Flowserve Valtek TigerTooth trim, flow through the Stealth expands and contracts as it passes through the seat retainer creating gradual, controlled pressure drops.

The Stealth is designed to gradually reduce pressure without generating high velocities. In addition to reducing the pressure gradually, Stealth utilizes a frequency shifting technology to further reduce audible noise. Flowserve’s new WaveCracker technology utilizes irregularly shaped cross-sections and improves noise reduction significantly over current designs.

The Stealth trim noise attenuator combines pressure reduction, velocity control, and noise elimination features to significantly reduce the noise caused by high-pressure drops.

Uninterruptible power supply

Staco Energy Products Co. added SNMP communications capabilities to their FirstLine three-phase Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). These models, which are available for 10, 15 and 20 kVA applications, allow users to network this UPS with their manufacturing and management systems. A control panel located on the front of the freestanding NEMA 1 enclosure includes an alarm and remote monitoring through an RS232 connection. FirstLine is made in the USA and includes a three-year warranty (covering both parts and labor).

FirstLine models are available for 10, 15 and 20 Kva applications with input voltage of 208, 220 and 480 Vac and a range of +10 /- 20 percent (166-229Vac). Input frequency is 60Hz +/-5 percent. Full load walk-in from 25 percent to 100 percent of rated load in 10 seconds. Inverter ouptut distortion is ≤5 percent THD for non-linear loads and ≤2 percent THD for linear loads. Output voltage is regulated to +/-1 percent of nominal at full load.

Mildew-preventing paint additive

International Paint LLC introduced Interthane 990 UHS, a new low VOC polyurethane technology that contains additives to help prevent the growth of mildew on the surface of exposed coated steelwork.

The high-performance, two-component white acrylic polyurethane was specially designed as a solution for the petrochemical ethanol market to address ongoing issues with mildew build-up on exterior steel tanks due to splashes, spills, fumes and overfill of the slow evaporating chemical.

Interthane 990 UHS is formulated for both new construction and maintenance applications. The finish coat can be sprayed, rolled or brush-applied, and is for use on correctly prepared and primed steel surfaces in a wide range of aggressive environments including chemical and petrochemical plants, offshore structures, bridges, pulp and paper mills, power plants and refineries.

Differential pressure switches

Mid-West Instrument announced its new line of 220/240 explosion proof, differential indicating switches.

The new 220/240 differential indicating switches are CSA, UL and ATEX certified. The Model 220 piston style has a working pressure to 4000 PSI (275bar) and ranges from 0-5 PSID to 0-100 PSID (0-0.35 bar to 0-7.0 bar). The Model 240 diaphragm style includes total separation between high and low side, 1500 PSI (103 bar) working pressure and ranges from 0-20 inches H20 to 0-100 PSID (0-50 mbar to 0-7bar).

Test lamp

The TL105 Test Lamp is a battery operated, rechargeable lamp.The test lamp provides a high-energy, broadband radiation source that emits sufficient energy in both the UV and IR spectra to activate UV or IR flame detectors.To simulate a fire, the test lamp automatically flashes at various selectable rates chosen with a rotary switch. When the flashing pattern for a specific type of flame detector is selected, the TL105 Test Lamp triggers the flame detector’s alarm or test mode.

The TL105’s integral housing features a full handle.A charge status indicator on the lamp informs field technicians when the instrument is fully charged or when recharging is necessary.The microcontroller is designed to prevent operation when the battery charge is low. The TL105 may be used in temperatures ranging from 5 to 122 degrees F (-15 to +50 degrees C) and relative humidity span 0 to 90 percent.

Bird deterrent laser

Bird-X Inc. announced their indoor-use bird deterrent laser, the Bird BLazer.It helps combat the expense, unsightliness and disease associated with birds and their droppings.

BLazer uses “fat beam” laser technology, in dozens of constantly-changing patterns to disrupt pigeons, sparrows, starlings, swallows and other birds and cover up to 10,000 square feet.

BLazer is designed for use in plants, warehouses, parking facilities, loading docks, sports arenas, distribution centers, transit facilities and more.The laser operates on 110v electricity. The 3R classified Bird BLazer uses a green laser diode and weighs 9 pounds.

Bird BLazer includes a six foot power cord, remote control, two security keys, mounting hardware and instructions featuring an overview of the issues relevant to birds and their droppings, plus tips on bird management.

BWR Steam Dryer Analyses

Westinghouse Electric Co. recently announced that it has teamed with Continuum Dynamics Inc. (CDI) to provide steam dryer analysis solutions for nuclear power plant customers operating boiling water reactors (BWRs). The new partnership with CDI will allow Westinghouse to provide a complete portfolio of steam dryer analysis, mitigation, repair and replacement options for BWRs. In business since 1979, CDI is a provider of engineering services and technical solutions for government and industry, mostly related to acoustic and flow analyses associated with the nuclear power and aerospace industries. This new teaming arrangement between Westinghouse and CDI will provide several services, including: screening analysis for acoustic resonance issues; main steam line strain gauge installation methods; steam dryer load definition; scale model testing methods and equipment; analysis method using acoustic circuit model algorithm; steam dryer stress/structural analysis methods; limit curve generation for power ascension; real-time uprate monitoring software; and acoustic side branch mitigation product – damper methodology.
