Siemens wins contract as US adds to wind capacity

20 March 2006 – Siemens Power Generation’s wind power division has received an order in the USA for 161 MW of wind turbines for the Wildorado Wind Ranch, to be located near Amarillo, Texas.

The company will supply 70 2.3 MW MK II turbines for a project scheduled for commissioning in the second quarter of 2007. Cielo Wind Power is developing the Wildorado Wind Ranch in conjunction with Edison Mission Group.

Within the past year, wind power projects in the US increased in total capacity by 2431 MW, with an investment of more than $3bn. This 36 per cent increase saw the States reach a figure of 9149 MW of installed wind energy capacity.

“Due to the US Congress’ prolongation of the production tax credits for wind power, and due to the high prices for oil and gas, this market experiences positive developments now and in the future,” said Andreas Nauen, head of the wind power division of Siemens PG. He continued: “With many states in the US implementing renewable portfolio standards wind power is clearly becoming a mature and more stable long term market.”
