19 December 2005 – Construction has started on the first 1000 MW nuclear power plant reactor to be built in China using domestic expertise and technology.
The Ling’ao II project, being constructed in the province of Guangdong, will consist of two 1000 MW units that will together generate 150 billion kWh each year.
The first unit is scheduled to begin operation in December 2010 with the second following in August the following year.
Although based on French pressurized water reactor technology, Chinese nuclear scientists working on behalf of the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Company Ltd have made modifications and alterations.
China currently generates around 2 per cent of its energy needs from nuclear power plants and is planning to almost double that by 2020 with the addition of 15 new 1000 MW nuclear reactors.
