Energy task force to ensure Philippine ministries meet conservation targets

24 August 2005 – A team has been created by the Philippine government to ensure that all ministries and departments comply with the President’s target of reducing energy consumption by ten per cent.

Fears over the country’s future energy supply had been raised by the recent surge in oil prices. The country currently imports 312 000 bbl/d of the 338 000 bbl/d oil it consumes.

Philippine energy secretary, Raphael Lotilla, said: “The President wants to show that the government is leading the effort to bring down the import bill.”

The team will monitor the ministries, which are under instructions to submit regular reports detailing their efforts to reduce energy consumption. The president has warned that any department failing to meet the target will face administrative sanctions.
