Bechtel to power new smelter complex in Oman

26 July 2005 – Bechtel is to build a power station in northern Oman as part of a $2.2bn project for Sohar Aluminium.

The project will also see Bechtel provide engineering, procurement, construction and project management services for an aluminium smelter, which will have a capacity of 325 000 tonnes of aluminium per year. Bechtel is to also build a desalination plant and a port facility for the project.

Sohar Aluminium is a joint venture of Oman Oil Company and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, each of which owns 40 per cent, and Canada’s Alcan Inc., which owns the remaining 20 per cent.
