France Halts Power Sales to Germany

1 July 2005 — Although only a few weeks into summer, unusually hot weather in southern Europe has resulted in France stopping its export of electric power to Germany. Bernhard Fischer, management board member of E.ON AG unit E.ON Energie AG, confirmed power deliveries from France have stopped but said he does not expect Germany will experience a power blackout on a scale that occurred in Italy in the summer of 2003 because there is sufficient capacity available from German power plants. Additionally, he said, Germany could reactivate some mothballed natural gas-fired power plants.
