20 June 2005 – American Electric Power has announced a further five coal plant locations to be included in its $3.7bn investment plan for environmental retrofits through 2010.
Flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions will be installed at John E. Amos plant units 1, 2 and 3 in W.Va. The three units have a total capacity of 2900 MW. The systems will also be installed at Ohio’s 585 MW Muskingum River unit 5, the 800 MW Big Sandy unit 2 in Ky. and Connesville unit 4, a 780 MW unit also located in Ohio. This unit will also have a selective catalytic reduction system installed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The 675 MW H.W. Pirkey plant in Texas is to have is current FGD system upgraded.
The projects will be completed between 2007 and 2010.
