Sri Lanka takes a loan to rebuild infrastructure

14 June 2005 – Sri Lanka’s government is to loan around $140m from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation to finance the rehabilitation of power transmission lines affected by the tsunami in December 2004.

The ODA loan will rehabilitate the transmission lines between Vavuniya and Kilinochchi in northern Sri Lank, where only 22 per cent of households have access to electricity. In addition, a substation in Kilinochchi will be reconstructed.

Since an indefinite ceasefire agreement in February 2002 between the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam brought the 20-year civil conflict to an end, reconstruction initiatives have been underway.
