BP Solar invests €28m to increase PV production

13 June 2005 – BP Solar is to invest €28m ($34m) expanding its two Spanish photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing facilities located near Madrid.

BP’s plant in Tres Cantos will have a new 20 MWp (MW peak) manufacturing line installed by the third quarter of 2006. The new &euro:24m line will feature screen print technology and will increase production from 30 MWp to around 50 MWp.

The plant at San Sebastián de Los Reyes will have its production capacity doubled from 25 MWp to 50 MWp with a €4m project due to be completed in the first quarter of 2006. It’s new production line will be highly automated and will use touchless soldering techniques.

Charles Postles, BP Solar’s European regional director, said: “These new lines represent another step forward in the development of the photovoltaic market in Europe, led by Germany, with around 300 MWp installed in 2004, and Spain, which is forecast to at least double in size in 2005.”

The expansion of BP Solar facilities in Spain is part of the company’s plan to more than double its current PV manufacturing capacity to reach 200 MWp by 2006.
