Swedish nuclear plant to get upgrade

18 March 2005 – Ringhals AB in Sweden has contracted Westinghouse, a subsidiary of BNFL, to uprate the nuclear station Ringhals 3 output by 13.5 per cent. The plant currently generates 915 MW.

Other modifications to the plant include replacement of the turbines, generators and moisture separator reheaters. The plant’s steam generators were replaced in 1995.

Westinghouse will carry out several procedures such as loss of coolant analysis, rod ejection analysis, inter-assembly water gap analysis and mechanical studies to assess the major components’ integrity.

The work is expected to conclude in July 2007.
