Bright future for Germany’s offshore wind market

27 January 2005 – Germany’s environment minister Jügen Trittin has forecast that offshore wind generated electricity will account for 15 per cent of Germany’s power production by 2030.

Speaking at a maritime conference in Bremen this week he said that some &euro45bn ($59bn) would be invested in the offshore wind sector by 2030 and predicted a great future for the industry. Trittin said that the prospects were good for offshore wind in the northern part of the country and that the sector could help provide alternative employment for those in the troubled shipping industry.

By 2020 Germany will have to generated 20 per cent of its electricity from renewables if it is to meet its target.
