Kvaerner to supply BFB biomass boiler

25 January 2005 – Kvaerner Power, part of the Aker Kvaerner group, is to supply a 107 MW power boiler using bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) technology for a power plant at UPM’s Rauma paper mill on the west coast of Finland.

Under the terms of the €20m contract awarded by UPM, the boiler will ready for commissioning at the end of 2006. With a thermal capacity of 107 MW it will burn bark, forest residue, peat, sludge and a small amount of recycled fuel. The BFB technology fulfils the co-combustion emission requirements and the use of biofuels will serve to reduce Finland’s CO2 emissions.

The power plant will be built by the new company Rauman Voima Oy, which is owned by Pohjolan Voima Oy and Rauman Energia Oy.
