Westinghouse and BNFL to design Swedish spent fuel plant

30 January 2004 – Westinghouse Sweden, Scandiaconsult and BNFL Environmental Services received an order from Svensk Karnbranslehantering AB (SKB), the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co., to undertake the basic design of an encapsulation plant for Swedish spent nuclear fuel.

The project will run for two years and result in the documentation needed for a license application submittal to the Swedish authorities in 2006.

The project covers principal design of the plant, safety and environmental analyses, and plant cost calculations to enable Swedish authorities to review the SKB principal license application. Westinghouse Sweden will be responsible for overall project management and design of the process, mechanical and electrical systems. BNFL Environmental Services will be responsible for the main process within shielded cells where the fuel elements are handled, and Scandiaconsult will be responsible for the civil and structural design and several other plant systems and functions.

Scandiaconsult is part of the RAMBOLL Group. The merging of RAMBOLL and Scandiaconsult created the largest Nordic provider of knowledge services within engineering, management, IT and international development projects.
