Constellation Energy Group selected for EPA award

BALTIMORE, Oct. 16, 2003 — Constellation Energy Group announced that it has been named a WasteWise Program Champion by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for implementing a comprehensive waste prevention and recycling program that resulted in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Constellation Energy holds the distinction of being one of only 14 companies or organizations nationwide to receive this year’s Program Champion award. More than 1,300 companies or organizations participate in the EPA’s voluntary WasteWise program. The EPA will present Constellation Energy with its Program Champion award as well as an Honorable Mention award for recycling accomplishments by a large organization, during the agency’s WasteWise annual meeting and awards ceremony on Oct. 16, 2003, in Washington.

“The very nature of our business is linked closely with the natural resources we all share,” said Edward Davis, director of environmental management. “Constellation Energy is extremely proud of its commitment to environmental stewardship, believing that proper care of the environment is essential for the well-being of our company, its employees and the communities we serve.”

As part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Constellation Energy has initiated education campaigns encouraging both employees and customers to reduce waste.

These initiatives include, but are not limited to, an intranet site that provides tips for reducing office waste, information regarding donation programs, and details on the company’s recycling program. During 2002, Constellation Energy recycled or reused nearly 2.2 billion pounds of material, and achieved a corporate recycling rate of 80 percent for all waste streams measured. Through recycling or reuse, Constellation Energy avoided emissions of more than 13,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the elimination of nearly 3,000 automobiles traveling on the nation’s highways per year.
