Enbridge selects Verano’s Industrial Defender for security and performance monitoring

MANSFIELD, Mass., July 21, 2003 — Verano, Inc., a provider of cyber-security management and control solutions for mission-critical industrial operations, announced that Enbridge Inc., has selected Verano’s Industrial Defender™ Watch for real-time monitoring of its pipeline infrastructure security and system performance.

Enbridge, a leading energy transportation and distribution company in the U.S. and Canada, operates the world’s longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system. With Watch, Enbridge can facilitate the prevention of dangerous and costly pipeline disasters caused by faults in system components or by cyber terrorists.

“Verano’s Industrial Defender Watch gives us a consolidated view of all potential cyber-security threats as well as performance monitoring metrics-a differentiating element over other monitoring solutions,” said Scott Clarke, supervisor, SCADA Services at Enbridge. “Within hours of installation, Industrial Defender Watch was deployed and monitoring performance metrics with the help of Verano’s professional service engineers.”

Verano’s Industrial Defender Watch is installed at the Enbridge Operations Control Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, where the company operates numerous pipelines, including Enbridge’s gas distribution system and the Vector natural gas pipeline. Watch has been integrated with the Enbridge supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) control system to ensure safe and efficient operation of its pipelines. This seamless integration allows personnel to observe operation system integrity in real-time from a dashboard located within the confines of Enbridge’s super-modern control room.

“With increasing reports of cyber-security incidents, companies responsible for operating mission-critical industrial infrastructure, such as energy pipelines, face daunting challenges in mitigating operational and environmental risk,” said Brian Ahern, president and CEO of Verano. “Enbridge’s selection of Industrial Defender Watch exemplifies its commitment to its shareholders and the environment, as well as confidence in Verano as the leading provider of industrial operations cyber-security management and control solutions.”

Verano announced the availability of Industrial Defender Watch in June 2003. Watch combines a comprehensive vulnerability audit and assessment of existing control systems by Verano’s professional service engineers, with a real-time security monitoring, detection and notification system built on the National Security Agency’s (NSA) Security Enhanced version of Linux. Watch, the first offering of Verano’s Industrial Defender suite, is the first real-time security software and services package designed specifically for industrial control environments. It is targeted for use by mission-critical industries including power generation, energy distribution, water distribution and transportation.
