Pakistan to permit power generation by industrial zone industries

20 May 2003 – The government of Pakistan has agreed to allow industrial units operating in export processing zones (EPZ) to generate their own electricity.

Industrial units will not, however, be permitted to compete on the international market with the current power rates available to industrial and commercial consumers but will be allowed to sell their surplus power to the adjoining industries and use their power for in-house consumption.

The facility will not be available to industrial units that are already in operation or outside EPZs, according to sources.
