Entergy Corp. names former Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman to board


NEW ORLEANS, May 9, 2003 — Entergy Corp. announced the election of Alexis Herman to its board of directors.

Herman, 55, served as former President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Labor and was the first African American to hold that position. She is currently the chairperson and chief executive officer of New Ventures, Inc., a corporate consulting company. She also serves as a director of Cummins, Inc., Presidential Life Insurance Company and MGM/Mirage. In addition, Herman is the chairperson of the Task Force for Human Resources of The Coca-Cola Company and the Diversity Advisory Board of Toyota Motor Sales.

Herman founded and was president of A.M. Herman & Associates, where she advised state and local governments on reducing and eliminating formal and informal labor market barriers, and she guided corporations on human resources issues related to training, mentoring and reducing turnover.

She helped state governments link economic development activities to job creation and training strategies. She also served as national director of the Minority Women Employment Program of R-T-P, Inc. in Atlanta. There she established programs to place minority women in white-collar and nontraditional jobs.

Her government positions have included: director of the Women’s Bureau in the Carter administration, deputy director of the Presidential Transition Office in 1992, chief executive officer of the 1992 Democratic National Convention Committee, deputy chair and chief of staff of the Democratic National Committee, assistant to President Clinton and director of the White House Public Liaison Office.

A native of Mobile, Ala., Herman graduated from Xavier University in New Orleans, La., in 1969. She began her professional career as a Catholic Charities social worker in Pascagoula, Miss., developing training opportunities for unemployed youth, unskilled workers and new entrants to the labor force. Herman resides in McLean, Va.

Dr. Norman C. Francis, a member of Entergy’s board of directors for nine years, retired from his role as a board member, effective May 8. Dr. Francis is president of Xavier University in New Orleans.
