FPL Manatee and Martin Plant expansions approved

JUNO BEACH, Fla., April 8, 2003 — Florida Power & Light Co. announced that the governor and cabinet approved the company’s Manatee and Martin power plant expansion proposals.

Construction will begin this summer and is due to be complete in 2005. The two new generation projects are designed to meet projected customer growth and increased use of electricity.

“We are very pleased with the governor and cabinet’s decision as well as the support given the projects by their local communities and by all the agencies that reviewed them, including Manatee and Martin counties, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Public Service Commission and others,” said FPL President Paul Evanson. We’re also very proud of the fact that these new natural gas-fired plants are expected to be among the cleanest and most cost-effective new generating units in the nation.

FPL plans to add one natural gas-fired, combined-cycle generating unit to its existing 9,500-acre Manatee plant site in Parrish, Florida and another to its existing 11,300-acre Martin plant site in Indiantown, Florida. The projects were selected by FPL after being analyzed against 134 other proposals in two competitive capacity solicitations. The two units, totaling 1,900 megawatts, will serve an additional 400,000 customers beginning in 2005 and are expected to cost approximately $1.1 billion.

Since FPL announced the projects in January 2002, employees have successfully worked to build support and share information about the projects with the community and interested neighbors through meetings, plant tours, presentations and Web-based information.
