GE introduces remote monitoring system to simplify engine testing and reduce customer costs


HOUSTON, TEXAS, April 2, 2003 — GE Aeroderivative and Package Services (GE APS), a GE Power Systems business, has introduced GE Virtual Test Cell Witness, a system designed to allow customers to view live operating data via the web from gas turbines being tested at a GE test cell facility.

This remote monitoring system now allows customers to view their engine tests from anywhere in the world.

“Until now, customers were required to invest substantial time and money to attend on-site engine testing at a GE test facility,” explained James Robertson, general manager of GE Aeroderivate and Package Services.

“This remote monitoring system from GE, which leverages technology and engineering solutions from a wide range of GE businesses, not only offers customers convenience and eliminates costly expenditures associated with travel and lodging, but also represents a revolutionary concept in engine testing.”

Each test cell facility uses a standard remote monitoring onsite PC monitor, which interfaces with the test facility’s control system to collect turbine data. This data is then transferred over the high-speed GE network to a dedicated server at the Live Data Center operated by GE Fanuc in Albany, New York.

Using access user names and passwords specific to each turbine test that have been authorized by a GE administrator at each applicable test cell facility, customers can remotely view live operating data from a designated Internet web site.

The GE Virtual Test Cell Witness System allows the test cell administrator to set access codes, turbine type, location, time, user information and witness email addresses for each test. An automatic email is then sent to the witnesses/customer to notify them of the scheduled test.

When the customer is ready to view the test he/she simply enters the URL provided into the browser and enters the user name and password to view the test data. From any location in the world, customers can view all aspects of the test – the same data available had the customer been physically present in the GE test cell.

Customer Service Managers located at the GE APS depots are available by telephone to answer questions during testing. Following the test procedure, temporary access is disabled and activated exclusively on a test-by-test basis.

Under development for nearly two years, the GE Virtual Test Cell Witness System is now available for the LM6000 product line, and will be commercially available for the LM2500 product line in May of 2003. GE APS now offers live viewing from test cells located in its Houston, Texas, Rheden, The Netherlands and Agotnes, Norway depots.
