Weston Power Plant returned to service after explosion

WESTON, Wis., Feb. 12, 2003 — Officials of Wisconsin Public Service Corp., a subsidiary of WPS Resources Corp. and owner/operator of the Weston Plant, said that Unit 3 of its Weston Power Plant returned to service at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The 325-MW generator had been shut down following a small explosion caused when coal dust in the ductwork of one of the plant’s six coal pulverizers ignited in a flash.

That pulverizer was taken out of service for repairs. The plant has six pulverizers. Only five are needed for full operation of the plant.

No one was injured during the blast. The company is still investigating the incident.
