6 February 2003 – Oman’s 285 MW Al-Kamil power station is on schedule to open in the second half of 2003 said Sheikh Suhail bin Mustahil Shimas, Minister of Housing, Electricity and Water following a visit to the facility today.
In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Sheikh Shimas said that the gas based station will replace the existing diesel stations in the wilayats of the Sharqiyah region. He added that the station will provide electricity to the wilayats of Sur, Al-Kamil Wal Wafi, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, Wadi Bani Khalid, Bediyah, Al-Qabil, Ibra, Al-Mudhaibi and Dima Waltaieen. It will be linked to Manah Electricity power station within the framework of the sultanates unified electricity network.
The Minister noted that the RO. 45m ($116m) station which will be managed and operated by Al-Kamil Power company was one of the projects included in the strategy of privatising the electricity sector and the desalination units related to it. The project is one of the most important projects in the Sharqiyah region and will boost economic, trade and construction development, he said.
