Environmentally sustainable Cleveland community to use solar electric power


NEWARK, Del., July 24, 2002 — AstroPower Inc. announced recently that it will provide solar electric power systems for the Cleveland EcoVillage, an environmentally sustainable townhouse development currently under construction in Cleveland, OH.

AstroPower’s partner in the urban regeneration project, the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO), has been awarded funding from the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) to power homes in the community with solar electric power.

Managed by DSCDO, a nonprofit community development firm in Cleveland, and EcoCity Cleveland, a nonprofit environmental planning organization, the Cleveland EcoVillage is designed to nationally showcase green-building technologies and to illustrate the potential of urban life in the most ecological way possible.

SEPA is providing funding for the project through Solar Power Solutions (SPS), an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by SEPA. This initiative is designed to address the barriers to commercialization and market penetration of solar electric power by increasing community involvement and developing the local solar infrastructure.

The Cleveland EcoVillage will feature AstroPower 1.2-kilowatt SunLine™ Solar Electric Home Power Systems in nine homes. A tenth home, which will serve as the community’s model, will feature a 4.8-kilowatt SunLine system. AstroPower’s SunLine system generates solar electric power and delivers it through the home’s existing circuits. Electricity not used in the home is sent back to the utility grid, spinning the utility meter backward and generating a credit on the homeowner’s utility bill.

The system features all necessary components for ease of operation, including a power meter so homeowners can monitor performance.

Recently named one of Governor Bob Taft’s 2002 EnergySmart Communities, the Cleveland EcoVillage will feature energy-efficient features in addition to solar electric power, and will be built using sustainable design practices. The project receives additional support from the DOE’s Building America Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the City of Cleveland and a number of community organizations.
