Sargent & Lundy selected to provide services for Pebble Bed Modular Reactor

Chicago, IL, Jan. 14, 2002 — Sargent & Lundy LLC announced today that it has been selected for a contract to provide consulting services to support the development of the new advanced Pebble Bed Modular Reactor nuclear technology.

The technology is being developed for Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty.) Ltd. (PBMR) and its investors consisting of Eskom (the primary electric utility in South Africa), British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL), the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC), and Exelon Corporation (the largest operator of nuclear electric generating stations in the United States).

The technology is being developed for potential worldwide application and commercialization.

Sargent & Lundy will be providing PBMR with primary consulting services for engineering, project controls, procurement, and project management.

Separately, Sargent & Lundy has also been selected to evaluate U.S. nuclear plant licensing criteria for the PBMR technology. Both assignments are expected to begin no later than January 21, 2002. The Sargent & Lundy services will be provided in both South Africa and the United States.
