Hamakua CC Plant Will Burn Naptha

Issue 4 and Volume 104.

S&S Energy Products has supplied Jones/Burns & McDonnell Hamakua Joint Venture with two GE LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine-generator sets for use at the Hamakua Energy Partners Cogeneration facility. The plant is under construction in Hawaii. The gas turbines are rated at 23 MW and will be used in combined-cycle with a 20 MW steam turbine-generator for total net plant output of 63 MW. Since natural gas is not available in Hawaii, the turbines will be fueled by naphtha, with distillate as back-up.

Hamakua Energy Partners, L.P., a joint venture of J.A. Jones Ventures, Inc. and TECO Power Services Corp., is owner and operator. Engineering and construction is being handled by a joint venture of J.A. Jones Construction Co. and Burns & McDonnell.

Exhaust from the steam turbine will be used to warm fresh water for a nearby aquaculture fish farm. Electricity from the plant will be sold under a power purchase agreement to Hawaii Electric Light Co.
