Calpine Corp. broke ground late last year on its 500 MW natural gas-fired Los Medanos Energy Center in Pittsburg, Calif., adjacent to the USS-POSCO Industry facility, which will purchase steam and electricity from the new power plant. The center is expected to enter operation in summer 2001.

Sithe New England Power Partners LLC has awarded $1.1 billion in contracts for two merchant power projects in Massachusetts to Raytheon Engineers & Constructors. The projects are a 1,600 MW gas-fired plant at Mystic Station in Everett and an 800 MNW gas-fired plant at the Fore River Station in Weymouth. Both plants will have Mitsubishi Heavy Industries natural gas and steam turbines. Both plants should be completed early in 2002.

Reliant Energy Desert Basin LLC has chosen BVZ Power Partners-Casa Grande, a joint venture between Black & Veatch and Zachry Construction Co. to provide engineering, procurement and construction at the 500 MW Desert Basin generation facility. The gas-fired, combined-cycle plant is scheduled to enter operation summer 2001.

Great River Energy has chosen Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp. to supply, engineer and construct two 155 MW simple-cycle combustion turbine generating unit at its proposed Pleasant Valley Station near Sargeant, Minn. The first two units should enter operation in March 2001.


Florida Power & Light’s $600 million Sanford plant repowering is under way, with Black & Veatch serving as construction manager. The project includes replacing two 1970-vintage, oil-fired generating units with combined-cycle natural gas-fired units.
