FPL Energy Inc. dedicated the largest wind energy facility in Texas in July, along with participants Central and South West Corp. and NEG Micon USA Inc. The 197 wind turbines at the Southwest Mesa Wind Project generate 75 MW of electricity, which is being supplied to three CSW subsidiaries: West Texas Utilities Co., Central Power and Light Co. and Southwestern Electric Power Co., under a 20-year agreement.
The site was chosen for its strong wind and proximity to the CSW grid. The 2,200-acre site is on top of a 600-foot high mesa spanning Upton and Crockett counties.
The Texas legislature has mandated that 2,000 MW of new renewable electricity be provided in the state.
