Construction is under way on the Rocky Road Power Plant, a 250 MW natural gas-fired, peak-demand power generation facility in the Village of East Dundee, Ill. Owners Nicor and Dynegy Inc. will sell power from the facility in the wholesale market to investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives and municipalities when commercial operation begins this summer.
Local authorities unanimously approved the plant on Feb. 1 and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued air permitting approvals on Feb. 4.
The plant is being built on an 18-acre site on the border of Kane and Cook counties. The simple-cycle facility will use natural gas delivered through the Nicor system as fuel to generate power. Dynegy and Nicor each own a 50 percent interest in the site.
This is the first power generation project jointly developed by the two companies since last year`s announcement of a strategic alliance to jointly pursue wholesale generation and cogeneration power projects in six Midwest states.
