American Electric Power (AEP) donated nearly 10,000 acres of surface-mined and reclaimed land to The Wilds, a wildlife refuge that protects and preserves rare and endangered species of wild animals, in 1986. AEP is now working to plant 15 million trees between 1996 and 2000 in support of the Utility Climate Challenge. Boy Scouts recently planted 20,000 saplings on 20 acres on The Wilds. Pictured are rhinoceroses at The Wilds. AEP received the 1998 Green Lights “Ally of the Year” award from the U.S. EPA, along with several other environmental awards for these and other programs.
