Group Developing ATS for 2001 Intro
The Gas Research Institute has joined forces with Allison Engine Co. and the DOE to develop the first industrial-size turbine to use a natural gas-fueled catalytic combustion system to achieve ultra-low emission levels. The Advanced Turbine System (ATS) is believed to hold promise for significant emissions reductions and gains in operating efficiency. Component tests are planned in 1999, with a full-scale demonstration in 2000 and product introduction in 2001.
Targeted for modular and distributed power generation markets, the new ATS is expected to improve gas turbine efficiencies while reducing operational costs in applications such as distributed power generation. The ATS engine is part of a new generation of Allison 701-K gas turbines being developed for generation systems in 4 MW to 13.4 MW range.
Early tests have shown the ATS reduces NOx by 0.9 tons per year and CO2 by 5.8 tons annually. p
