Edwards Dam Faces Dismantling in 1999

Ownership of the 160-year-old Edwards Dam on the Kennebeck river will transfer Jan. 1, 1999 to the state of Maine, with dam removal scheduled for the summer of 1999. Funding for dam removal and fish restoration activities, totaling $7.25 million, will come from shipbuilder Bath Iron Works and the Kennebec Hydro Developers Group, a coalition of dam operators upstream of the Edwards Dam.

Edwards is the first dam salmon encounter on the migration up the Kennebec, and it has long been a target of Atlantic Salmon conservationists. p
