Static Synchronous Compensator

The STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is connected in shunt with the transmission line to enable accurate voltage regulation for both peak and light loads, prevention of voltage collapse, transient stability improvement and power oscillation damping. As an electronic VAR generator, it is superior to conventional technologies because of its high speed of response and harmonics mitigation, while requiring much less installation space. Applications include wide area voltage management, arc furnace flicker mitigation, and improved economic dispatch. Two STATCOMS have been commissioned and two others are scheduled for early 1998.
