IPP Growth Measured
The international independent power market has grown to more than 2,800 active projects and 1,034 GW, according to Hagler Bailly`s recently issued “Profile Update: Global Independent Power Market: Status and Trends.” Project announcements have increased more than seventeen-fold and the number of players has quadrupled since 1991, according to the report.
In March 1992, there were 178 project initiatives with a total capacity of 87 GW, exclusive of the United States and Canada. In October 1997, Hagler Bailly identified 2,826 project initiatives in 104 countries totaling 1,034 GW. This includes projects that are operating, announced or under development.
There are now 66 GW of IPP greenfield capacity operating worldwide. This represents an 18 percent increase in the last six months. Nearly 31 GW, or 41 percent, of the operating greenfield IPP capacity is found in Asia. Asia accounts for 70 percent of the new greenfield project capacity under development worldwide at 570 GW in 1,318 projects.
