MidAmerican sets wind energy plan

MidAmerican Energy Co. has announced an agreement with Zond Development Corp. to supply MidAmerican with wind-generated energy. According to the agreement, Zond will supply to MidAmerican, on average, 45.3 MW of electricity per month for 20 years. Zond is required to begin supplying the energy to MidAmerican within three years after regulatory agencies approve the agreement. Specific terms of the agreement were not released.

Zond will supply the energy from approximately 150 wind turbines to be constructed in Buena Vista County, Iowa. Zond will interconnect with the MidAmerican electric transmission system at a nearby MidAmerican substation. The contract will fulfill MidAmerican?s requirement under Iowa law to purchase 55 MW of electricity generated by alternate energy sources in Iowa. MidAmerican receives 10 MW of electricity from alternate energy producers in Iowa, including methane extracted from a landfill. The company has another 11 MW under contract from alternate energy sources outside Iowa.
