Project Habitat draws 12 new utility members

Twelve electric utility companies have joined a consortium of business and wildlife groups in an effort to protect and enhance habitat while managing rights-of-way. The program, called Project Habitat, offers utility companies tools and information to manage rights-of-way to benefit species such as songbirds, deer, quail and wild turkeys. Project Habitat is sponsored by American Cyanamid Co. in conjunction with national wildlife management groups Buckmasters, the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail Unlimited.

The group began last year with 12 charter member utilities. Most recent inductees include Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Commonwealth Edison, Consumers Power Co., Florida Power & Light Co., Gainesville Regional Utility, Georgia Power Co., Houston Lighting & Power Co., Nantahala Power & Light Co., Northern States Power Co., Oglethorpe Power Corp. and Virginia Power Co. More information on the group is available at (800) 545-9525 ext. 693.
