Utilities unify to study cold EV performance
Hydro-Quebec and Green Mountain Power are testing a fleet of Solectria electric vehicles (EV) to gauge their performance in cold weather and rural locations. The tests are being conducted at Hydro Quebec`s electrochemical and electrical laboratory north of Montreal, as part of the Electric Vehicle Demonstration Project of Vermont.
Like California, the New England states are mandating EV sales, but New England weather is far colder and the population widely rural. EVs have no inherent source of heat so the Solectria is heavily insulated and is equipped with a special heating system to maintain battery efficiency in cold temperatures. A kerosene heater is used for passenger comfort.
