GPU Generation plans unit shutdowns
GPU Generation Corp. has announced plans to cease operations of Werner Unit 4 and Gilbert Unit 3 in New Jersey after this summer`s peak-demand because of their high operating costs. Due to operating costs, the units have been generating less than 10 percent of their capacity in recent years, with Gilbert generating 9.61 of capacity in 1995 and Werner only 6 percent. The Gilbert unit, started in 1949, is 72 MW and the Werner unit, started in 1953, is 58 MW. Newer combined-cycle and combustion-turbine generation units at Gilbert will continue generation as will four combustion turbines at Werner.
