Nuclear plant has generator problem
06/12/2013
MOSCOW - An Iranian official says his nation's Russian-built nuclear power plant has suffered an electric generator malfunction. Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi, said Russian and Iranian experts are trying to fix the problem, without saying when it occurred or whether it led to the plant's shutdown. Iran has defied Western demands that it halt nuclear programs it could use for weapons. The Bushehr plant is not considered a proliferation threat, but some nations have claimed that long cracks in part of it could affect its safety. Persistent technical problems have halted the plant's operation for long periods since it started up in September 2011. |
Remarks of NRC Chairman Allison M. MacFarlane At the 2013 Fuel Cycle Information Exchange
06/12/2013
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the text of the following speech: Good morning, and thank you, John, for your kind introduction. On behalf of the Commission, I'd like to welcome you to the 8th Annual Fuel Cycle Information Exchange (FCIX). This is the first time I'm attending this conference. I think it's a timely opportunity to share experiences and lessons learned on various aspects of the fuel cycle. If we examine the current landscape, we can see that there are a number of factors that influence our work. One that's receiving a lot of attention is applying lessons learned from the Fukushima accident into regulatory and industry practices. Operating reactor aging, new construction, developments in fuel cycle technology, security concerns, waste policy issues, restricted budgets, and an actively-engaged public are also important influences. |
Iran: nuclear plant has generator problem
06/12/2013
Iran's Russian-built nuclear power plant has had an electric generator malfunction, an Iranian official said Monday. The flaw at the Bushehr plant wasn't caused by recent earthquakes in Iran, Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi, Iran's ambassador to Russia, was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying. Sajjadi said Russian and Iranian experts are trying to fix the problem, without saying when it occurred or whether it led to the plant's shutdown. Russia's state-controlled Rosatom nuclear agency, which built the plant, had no comment on Sajjadi's statement. |
U.S. project bets big on nuclear energy; Success of new reactors, and their cost, crucial to future of industry
06/12/2013
FULL TEXT The two nuclear reactors rising out of the red Georgia clay here, twin behemoths of concrete and steel, make up one of the largest construction projects in the United States and represent a giant bet that their cost - in the range of $14 billion - will be cheaper than alternatives like natural gas. But something else is at stake with the reactors called Vogtle 3 and 4: the future of the U.S. nuclear industry itself. The Alvin W. Vogtle nuclear power plant near Augusta is using a new plant design, a new construction method and a new system of nuclear regulation for what the industry says is a faster, better and cheaper system that will lead the way for a new generation of reactors. |
Power crisis shaves off 2pc GDP
06/12/2013
Since Pakistan is facing numerous challenges for the last many years, power crisis playing a major contributory factor have shaved off annual GDP growth to two percent, thus stuck the GDP at a level, which is half of country's long-term trend potential of about 6.5 percent per annum. With rising demand of electricity every year and following current position of expansion, power crisis seems not to be over which in turn will effect economic growth of the country. "The critical issue is that according to National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), the annual electricity demand growth rate is forecasted to hover around 5 to 6 percent over next ten years. With current position of expansion, it seems that crisis will not be over which in turn will effect economic growth of the country," revealed Pakistan Economic Survey 2012-13 launched here on Tuesday. |

Mexico's renewable energy goals are impossible to achieve without greater participation of nuclear power, Rubén Flores García, commissioner at energy regulator CRE, said in a presentation. Speaking at the Futuro de la Energía Nuclear event in Mexico City, Flores said renewable energies, like wind and solar, would not be enough to meet the mandate of the renewable energy law (LAERFTE) to decrease the participation of fossil fuel-based generation below 65% by 2024. |
