LePage seeks wind changes before supporting energy bill compromise
05/24/2013
AUGUSTA -- Gov. Paul LePage is withholding support for a compromise bill being worked out by the Legislature's Energy Committee that's aimed at expanding Maine's natural gas infrastructure, boosting funding for energy efficiency, directly lowering businesses' electricity costs and making it more affordable for residents to abandon oil heat. LePage won't support the bill unless it also requires wind developers prove their projects will lower electricity costs in order to receive state approval and raises the 100-megawatt limit energy generation facilities must meet so they can count toward the state's renewable energy goals, according to Patrick Woodcock, who directs LePage's energy office. |

I'd like to thank our witnesses for being with us today. Today we are meeting on four bills to expand American energy production, create American jobs, cut through bureaucratic red tape and streamline a regulatory process that is forcing companies to avoid federal land for energy production in search of state and private land more amenable to energy development. We will be hearing witness testimony on four bills. H.R. 555, the "BLM Live Internet Auctions Act," would bring BLM leasing into the 21st century by amending the Mineral Leasing Act to allow BLM to conduct lease sales through the internet. |

Kuwait aims to generate 15% of electricity from renewables by '30
05/23/2013
KUWAIT CITY, May 22: Recording one of the highest energy consumption rates per capita in the world, Kuwait is keen on pursuing a sustainability plan that includes generating 15 percent of electricity from renewable resources by 2030. At the rate Kuwait is consuming energy, with the average Kuwaiti using 22 times more resources than the country provides per person, experts believe it will need as much as 20 percent of its oil production capacity just for energy generation by 2017 - a consumption pattern deemed unsustainable given that 66 percent of the country's GDP is dependent on the oil industry. On June 2-3, 2013, Kuwait's senior government officials, policymakers and influential private sector stakeholders will gather at the Kuwait Energy & Efficiency Conference at the Hilton Kuwait Resort to start mapping a national energy efficiency strategy. Organised by MEED Events and supported by the Ministry of Electricity & Water and Kuwait National Petroleum Company, Kuwait Energy & Efficiency 2013 will provide an excellent platform to debate and discuss a sustainable energy plan for Kuwait, including identifying concrete solutions that will help energy consumption in Kuwait. Kuwait's increasing energy consumption has been driven by a number of factors. |
Drax Power forecast to shift even larger volumes of power through retail arm in 2013
05/23/2013
B2B energy retailer Haven Power has been on a significant acquisition drive since 2011. It has seemingly redoubled this effort in the past few quarters, picking up customers using the hook of competitive pricing allied with superior customer service. This strategy puts heavy strain on an already under pressure margin, with Drax Power admitting in its recent annual report that it expects "Haven Power to make a modest loss up to 2015." Datamonitor's soon to be published "Structural Balances of Key Power and Gas Retailers in Great Britain" shows this may be due to a change in Drax Power's market position, specifically in relation to its relationship with Centrica. Contracted power sales to Centrica were around 7TWh in 2012 but will be significantly lower in 2013, in the region of 2-3TWh. |
