Cummins generators

Four additional models of spark-ignited generator sets from Cummins Power Generation Inc. have received certification to the new exhaust emissions standards required by the EPA The newly certified models—GGHG, GGHH, GGLA and GGLB—range in size from 85 kW to 150 kW. These four models join a portfolio of five previously certified spark-ignited generator sets from Cummins Power Generation— GGMA, GGMB, GGMC, GGHE and GGHF—ranging in size from 20 kW to 75 kW.

Cummins developed an emissions solution package that includes an electronic air-fuel-ratio (eAFR) control and an oxygen sensor for all spark-ignited generator set models, and an additional three-way catalyst for models above 80 kW. This solution package does not change the generator set’s dimensions or footprint—customers can continue using the same generator set enclosures and installation dimensions but receive the benefit of lower emissions and higher performance.

Air burners

Air Burners LLC introduces a portable wood waste burner that produces up to 350 kW of electricity. The machine is based on the company’s standard wood waste disposal systems. The electricity is generated by a “turbo-expander” power generator that is integrated into Air Burners’ standard firebox and the heat is collected from the thermo-ceramic refractory walls and very efficiently converted into electricity. The largest system PG327 is priced at $695,000 and the smaller Model PG220 at $395,000. No on-site assembly is required.

ExxonMobil lubricant

ExxonMobil’s synthetic Mobil SHC XMP 320 gear oil has been selected for a second-fill application in GE wind turbines operated by enXco, a leading owner and operator of wind turbines in North America.

Used in more than 20,000 wind turbines worldwide, Mobil SHC XMP gear oil is designed to deliver long-lasting performance, reduce wear on critical parts and minimize component replacement, which can translate into valuable cost savings and reduced maintenance expenditures.

Recently, enXco, an EDF Energies Nouvelles company, had 32 of its 1.5 MW GE turbines converted to Mobil SHC XMP 320 synthetic gear oil at their Minnesota-based Chanerambie and Viking Wind Farms. The entire four-week conversion process was executed by ExxonMobil’s exclusive service provider Integrated Lubrication Services, COT-Puritech, with ExxonMobil Field Engineering and analytical support. A proprietary gearbox flushing procedure, part of COT-Puritech’s Wind Turbine Lubrication Services, was performed to remove existing contamination and virtually all of the residual oil from the gearbox and lube system, which remained from the previous synthetic lubricant used during original fill.

Flowserve cooler

Flowserve Corp., a provider of flow control products and services for the global infrastructure markets, introduces the Flowserve LD 682 Seal Cooler, which increases safety, improves reliability and reduces emissions by controlling seal temperature. This economical mechanical seal support system meets the requirements of API 682 and is designed for use in high-temperature power, chemical and refinery applications.

The LD 682 Seal Cooler can be completely vented and drained, allowing for the removal of gasses and vapors that can impede performance and safety during maintenance. The design promotes a good thermosyphoning effect, providing circulation during stand-by conditions and improved fluid circulation during operation. Temperature-indicator labels allow easy monitoring of operational or seal system problems.

Siemens switchgear

Siemens Energy has developed the new gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear NX Plus C Wind. The gas-insulated switchgear deployed by Siemens to date for wind turbines operated at a voltage of 24 kV. The new NX Plus C Wind switchgear operates at a voltage of 36 kV. It is also of a more compact design than the previously built 36 kV Siemens switchgear and can be readily accommodated in the tower of a wind turbine.

Siemens developed its new medium-voltage switchgear NX Plus C Wind above all for deployment in wind farms. It is installed in the base of the wind turbine tower and therefore has to fit through the door. Because there is a limited amount of space in the tower the 36 kV switchgear is of a very compact design: Compared to a conventional 24 kV switchgear the new unit is 1000 mm deep and thus 250 mm shorter. Moreover, stringent demands were made of the switchgear’s reliability. In the event of harsh weather conditions the switchgear in the wind turbines may often be inaccessible for days or even weeks.

Inspection door

To improve conveyor maintenance, Martin Engineering has introduced an updated, low-profile version of its industry-standard inspection and access door. Installed to allow inspection and maintenance access inside belt conveyor transfer chutes and other enclosures, the improved Martin Door features a low profile that minimizes dust accumulation on the door and frame while providing a dust-tight seal.

The slim new Martin Door allows safe, secure inspection of critical areas without the need for specialized tools. The new door offers the option of an integral yet removable steel screen to protect personnel from being struck by material cast out of the enclosure when the door is open.

The top of the handle of the new door stands less than 2 inches (50 mm) above the wall, providing minimal area where material can accumulate.

The new Martin Door is available in five standard sizes: 9x12, 12x14, 12x18, 18x24 and 24x24 inches (229x305, 305x356, 305x457, 457x610 and 610x610 mm).

Available in painted mild steel or 304 stainless steel, the door is installed by bolting or welding its frame to the wall of the structure. A lockable latch is available.

MAG fabrication

MAG’s new Rapid Material Placement System (RMPS) and quick-cure molding system for wind blades combine to reduce labor content by two-thirds and double throughput. The system is an automated blade molding facility unto itself, capable of spraying in-mold coatings, dispensing/lay-up of glass and carbon fiber materials, and dispensing/application of adhesive. It brings 3 m/sec (10 ft/sec) lay-up speed to placement of materials in blade skin, spar cap, and sheer web molds, with laser- and vision-based wrinkle detection in cross or longitudinal directions. Depending on the laminate schedule, the system can reduce lay-up time 85 percent on a 45-meter blade.

Programmed off line, the CNC-controlled system consists of a gantry system with multi-axis end effectors capable of manipulating spray heads and adhesive applicators, as well as tooling for spooling and placing materials. After application of gel-coat with spray-head tooling, a ply-generator with a ten-roll magazine of material cuts and dispenses plies to the lay-up end effector on the gantry. The lay-up end effector spools up the material supplied by the ply generator. As the fabric is paid out onto the mold, a pair of articulating powered brushes smoothes it to the tool surface. The lay-up system is mechanically repeatable to ±2 mm, with application tolerance of ±5 mm.

Two such gantry systems adjacent to one another can each produce a 45-meter blade-shell half in less than two hours, with half the manual labor of conventional methods. The gantry system rides on rails that are flush with the floor. It also carries bulk supply systems for gel-coat and adhesive.

GKS rentals

MPE power supply

Stop switches

ASI offers mushroom head industrial switches typically used in emergency stop applications. These switches are now available in both metal and plastic and with either a 40mm or 60mm operator head.
