Hawk Measurement Systems, a provider of level and flow measurement technology, offers the new SULTAN Series non-intrusive acoustic wave transmitter. The SULTA features a non-contact measurement and a low installation cost. The level device is ruggedly designed to withstand harsh environments. The SULTAN Series’ combines low frequency, high power and Adaptive Gain Technology. The transmitters are easy to calibrate and commission and effectively measure difficult-to-measure vapors, dust, solids and liquids in a wide spectrum of industries, including power stations. Featuring a programmable, fail-safe mode, low cost-per-point and pump control, the SULTAN Series is engineered to be HART, GOSHAWK, MODBUS, Profibus and Fieldbus compatible. The SULTAN Series emits an acoustic wave pulse that is reflected from the surface of the material being measured. The reflected signal is processed using specially developed software to enhance the correct signal and reject false or spurious echoes. The measured signal is temperature compensated to provide maximum accuracy to the outputs and display.

Product testing and certification organization FM Approvals, a nationally recognized testing laboratory, recently published its comprehensive 2007 Approval Guide on CD-ROM. The 2007 Approval Guide provides up-to-date, detailed engineering data and technical information on the application and use of more than 45,000 FM Approved fire protection products, building materials, and electrical equipment and services that best prevent property loss. The CD-ROM also contains more than 140 Approval Standards documents, indicating the rigorous testing criteria products must meet to become FM Approved.

Pancake Breathing Filter

North Safety Products, a manufacturer of occupational health and safety products, offers a low profile and low breathing resistance Pancake Filter. The filter is designed to fit comfortably under welding helmets, face shields, and narrow shell helmets, yet it is firm enough to easily perform negative pressure user seal checks. The new 75FFP100NL Pancake Filter is designed to provide relief from nuisance levels of organic vapors, acid gases and ozone.

Alarm Analysis Tool

Emerson Process Management introduced an Alarm Analysis tool designed specifically for its Ovation expert control system. The Ovation system is a key component of Emerson’s PlantWeb digital architecture that delivers process and equipment diagnostics data over digital buses to improve plant operations and streamline maintenance activities. Emerson’s Alarm Analysis package examines alarm data collected by the Ovation historian, providing the user with information necessary to minimize unnecessary alarms. It can be used on-line or off-line. Tailored specifically for the Ovation system, the package allows users to sort, filter and analyze alarm information by a number of variables, including point names, descriptions, plant areas, time ranges and types of alarm. Data can also be summarized according to alarm display, alarm priority, alarm rate and frequency. The Alarm Analysis tool also offers various statistical analysis functions, including operator response analysis, plant upset analysis, as well as auto-correlation analysis, which considers the causal relationship between alarms, providing additional valuable insight for optimizing alarm generation and reporting. Based on the analysis, engineers can make appropriate changes.

Fire Pump Flow Meter Systems

Preso Meters offers its Fire Pump Flow Meter Systems, which provide a simple, precise and economical method of testing fire pump performance. The systems are designed to be used instead of the typical hose valve header and hose method. Flow monitoring is achieved by allowing the operator to read the water flow directly in gallons per minute or liters per second. The fire pump systems’ primary elements are designed to produce a differential pressure to attain accurate flow measurements. Preso offers three types of fire pump systems available for pipe sizes 2 inches to 16 inches. These models include the PFA Ellipse, PFV Venturi and the PFB Annular pitot tube. The systems offer low permanent pressure loss and require little to no maintenance.

High Temperature Remote Viewing System

Lenox Instrument Co.’s FireSight High-Temperature Remote Viewing System is an easy and economical way to speed light off and reduce NOx emissions by permitting color video monitoring of combustion and process control in boilers, furnaces, kilns and incinerators. Capable of operating in temperatures up to 3,500 F (air-cooled model) or 4,000 F (water-cooled), the FireSight system is ideal for use in power plants. FireSight systems are used to speed light off, evaluate flame quality, determine status of igniters, and view flame impingement, NOx emissions and smoke. In power generation applications, the FireSight systems typically reduce fuel consumption by as much as 2 percent and pollution by as much as 20 percent. The Light Volume Control feature, a Lenox exclusive, allows the operator to easily adjust the amount of light transmitted to the camera, eliminating flaring and ensuring a high-quality image from initial light off to maximum load. The system also features quartz optics that withstand temperatures up to 1,200 F higher than glass lenses used in many systems.

Safety Switches

Automation Systems Interconnect Inc. recently released a new line of safety switches. The new KB plastic series and KM metal series of safety switches are compliant with IEC/EN 60947-5-1. Both safety switch families are available with a hinge operator, slotted lever or key operated. Some of the features that make these safety switches unique include interchangeable and removable auxiliary contacts which simplify wiring. Also the operating heads are completely interchangeable thereby making inventory management easy. There is a wide selection of contact arrangements. These new limit switches were designed to satisfy the requirements of simple set-up, modularity, sturdiness and constant reliability. In addition to meeting international standards, the KM and KB series are cUL.

Programmable Controllers

United Electronic Industries (UEI) has announced the release of the UEIPAC series of Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs). The UEIPAC offers a combination of compact size, industrial ruggedness and flexibility. The new family is suitable for environmental controllers, test stand controllers as well as hardware-in-the-loop simulators. The UEIPAC Cube is a complete, self-contained controller and includes an embedded computer running standard Linux operating system, two Ethernet ports, a serial port, an SD Card interface, an inter-PAC sync interface and either three or six slots for I/O boards. The Cubes are very rugged, having been tested from -40 C to 85 C, at 5g vibration, 50g shock and up to 70,000 feet. Using the UEIPAC, applications written on a PC can be deployed on the cube and run fully standalone. This allows smaller, faster, more reliable and higher performance systems than possible using an external host computer. It also eliminates the cost of the dedicated host PC and guarantees long term availability of the identical hardware. The UEIPAC 300 allows the installation of up to three I/O boards.
