Laser and Sonar Profiling Tools

Envirosight has released its new laser and sonar profiling tools, designed to integrate with ROVVER and SuperVision inspection crawlers to analyze pipe. The laser profiler works above flow lines and the sonar profiler works below. Each can be used individually, or both simultaneously. The profilers come with software capable of generating reports. The profiling hardware consists of a probe, which attaches to the head of a ROVVER or SuperVision camera. The probe is fitted with a laser or sonar profiler, or both. Together with the included profiling software, the probe measures the diameter and concentricity of pipe 4-160 in. in diameter, performing up to 250,000 measurements a minute with ±1 percent accuracy. Using machine vision, the profiler software extracts the laser profile from the camera’s video feed. It combines this information with sonar data (where available and necessary) to analyze the entire circumference of the pipe. This data can be used to generate standard reports with statistical analyses, as well as an onscreen 2-D or 3-D representation of the pipe’s interior wall. Standard reports track a pipe’s true diameter, ovality (per ASTM 1216), capacity, x/y diameter and maximum diameter. The software can generate a 3-D representation of the pipe, with variations in the pipe wall shown for visual analysis. 2-D representation is available as well.

The MAXOS system includes a non-contact light probe, a bridge or horizontal gantry, a turntable option, installation, custom programming, training and maintenance. The MAXOS system is designed for automated high-speed production inspection. It can inspect polished and unpolished metal, plastics and glass. Applications include turbine blades, pump components such as impellers, medical components such as implants and other high-precision components. The MAXOS collects individual points at a rate of 100 per second. It provides an accuracy of +/- 2 m on matte surfaces and +/- 10 m on polished metal. The 100-ohm sensor has a temperature range of -200 °C to 670 °C, with short-term repeatability and long-term drift of ± 0.01 °C at 0 °C. The 5609 may be ordered in either one-quarter-inch or six mm diameters. One-quarter-inch-diameter PRTs come in sheath lengths of 12, 15 or 20 inches. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has released the Thermo Scientific TS Flow 100, an in-situ flow meter that performs no-contact measurement of gas velocities, gas temperatures and volumetric flow rates directly in stacks and ducts. The Thermo Scientific flow meter comes in two versions: a cross-stack model and a single penetration probe type. With the cross-stack version, ultrasonic transducers are mounted on both sides of the stack. These transducers alternately transmit and receive sound pulses with and against the flow direction to calculate the velocity of the gas and determine the volume flow during operation. The TS Flow 100 probe-type flow meter measures stack velocities with a single stack penetration. The probe-type flow meter consists of the probe with a single transducer, an evaluation unit or control panel and a connecting cable.

Wärtsilä Corp. introduced the new 20-cylinder 46F engine for power plant installations burning heavy fuel oil. The new engine develops 23,000 kW (1150 kW/cylinder ) at 600 rpm, suitable for both 50 and 60 Hz electricity generation.
The Wärtsilä 46F’s NOX emissions are 710 ppm NOX at 15 percent oxygen and it complies with the World Bank environmental requirements. The Wärtsilä 20V46F engine has a twin injection pump and scaleable control. The complete Wärtsilä 20V46F diesel generating set measures 21 m long with an extreme width of 6.275 m and height of 6.2 m above the underside of the baseframe, and has a total weight of 413 tons. The Model 5000 is constructed of 316L stainless steel wetted materials. This design also provides 5x rated line pressure or 2,000 PSI, whichever is less. Power Service Concepts has added to their line of generator battery monitors; the GBTP-12, a portable unit designed to test/monitor generator cranking batteries during a planned generator test cycle to determine if the batteries are capable of performing during a cranking cycle. The unit is designed to follow the EGSA Performance Standard 100B for Engine Cranking Batteries. The unit will monitor both 12VDC batteries on a 24VDC system to ensure that the battery is capable of maintaining 1.50V per cell during the cranking cycle on the battery. The unit is also used to identify batteries being overcharged or that have failed the test cycle. For an overcharge condition, greater than 13.8VDC, the unit will show the overcharge voltage on the 3.5” panel-mount display and illuminate an overcharge LED. The unit incorporates a real-time 3.5” LED digital display for each battery and displays the voltage level of the battery at all times. Each battery has its own display and indicators. The unit is also available for test/monitoring 24VDC batteries only and is designated GBTP-24.

INVISTA has announced its DBA Test Trailer designed to evaluate the benefits of DBA dibasic acids in reducing SO2 emissions in wet lime or limestone scrubbers. Data compiled from the evaluation can be used to design and install a permanent heated storage tank with a metering feed system. The trailer comprises a 5,000-gallon storage tank equipped with an 11-kW glycol heater. An 80-foot by 1/2 inch diameter detachable 800 watt electrically heat-traced line is also available. As particles flow near and around the probe, minute currents are dynamically induced into the probe by flowing particulate. A DSP processes the signal into an absolute output that is reasonably linear to mass. Protective layers over the probe work in combination with induction-sensing to ensure operation with all types of particulate, including moist powders and conductive dusts. Hawk Measurement Systems offers the new Microwave Pulse Switch, a sender-receiver remote or integral system that addresses the power industry’s concerns for material handling, specifically in flyash precipitators. This product uses radio frequency (10.525GHz) to spread a wave of energy from a sensor to a detector. The Microwave Pulse Switch is a span-measuring device similar to the radiometric switch that detects material in the path of the energy beam. It is also a non-contacting device, eliminating the possibility of process conditions fouling the sensor. Using a low-energy source compliant with FCC CFR-15 rules for radiation emission, the Microwave Pulse Switch does not require warning sign posting for use. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announces the Model 81i MCG mercuric chloride generator, a solution to the demand for weekly system integrity testing for mercury emissions monitoring at coal-fired power plants. An optional feature for new systems and a retrofit for installed units, the Model 81i MCG is a fully integrated part of the stack probe assembly, which is automatically controlled via the existing DAHS system. Utilizing the method of gas phase titration, the Thermo Fisher Scientific method uses its 81i elemental calibrator as a source of mercury and a small cylinder of 250 ppm chlorine in nitrogen balance to form mercuric chloride inside a specially designed mixing chamber. The chamber is located in the probe to minimize transport of reactive mercuric chloride. From the mixing chamber, newly formed mercuric chloride is fed directly into the probe at the filter to complete the system integrity check under the mandated Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR). The result is a system that requires no wet chemicals and no extra space as the generator is incorporated into the probe.
