NFL, PSEG to provide green energy for Super Bowl XLVIII

Super Bowl blackout

Public Service Enterprise Group (NYSE:PEG), a diversified energy company with more than $9 billion in annual revenues announced Wednesday that it is partnering with the NFL Environmental Program to provide green power for Super Bowl XLVIII, the first Super Bowl held in the New York-New Jersey metro region.

PSEG said that for every megawatt hour used to power the Super Bowl, one renewable energy credit (REC) will be purchased and retired on behalf of Super Bowl XLVIII. This includes power used at the following locations: Met Life Stadium, the AFC and NFC team hotels and Super Bowl Boulevard, which is the largest public Super Bowl event in Times Square in New York City.

PSEG's REC purchase will include New Jersey solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) from PSE&G's Kearny Solar Farm. Kearny Solar Farm, a 3 megawatt-dc farm, was developed  during Governor Christie administration's in an effort to install solar on undeveloped brownfields and landfills. Any remaining RECs will be purchased from Community Energy Inc., the Jersey-Atlantic City Wind Farm, the largest commercial grade wind farm in the state.

Since PSEG is purchasing the RECs, the purchase will not affect New Jersey ratepayers.
